Taken in 1977. This aerial view shows exactly where International Alloys factory was located. The view looks towards town from the Rabans Lane area. Haydon Hill housing estate can be seen bottom left with Bicester Road going diagonally towards the top of the photograph where it meets the roundabout at the Haydon Road and Gatehouse Road junction. International Alloys is in the centre of view between Bicester Road and the railway line. The firm came to Aylesbury in 1940, building their new factory on previously undeveloped land that was then on the outskirts of town. There were not many houses in that area then. One of those old houses can just be seen in this photograph. It is Haydon Hill House which is surrounded by trees opposite the four blocks of flats on the left. Over on the right, beyond the railway line it was still fields. The jagged trackway would later be turned into Smeaton Close. This is Haydon Hill House, a large 8-bedroom house that stood where Alderson Close is today (by Intalbury Avenue). Julia said "These pictures are of Haydon Hill House, which was demolished (from memory) in the early 1980s. Once a grand old house, it was later divided into large flats, and my grandparents lived in one of these on the ground floor. Photo Credit: Julia Crane
